Couples Therapy

Chances are if you’re reading this, your relationship needs work.  Navigating difficult issues like betrayal of trust, infidelity, power struggles or clashing attachment styles is more effective with professional help.

Common issues I see in this work include couples who are struggling to recover from past emotional or sexual affairs. I also work with folks who need help communicating better with their partners, or who are in the middle of redefining their relationship while dealing with their own individual trauma or issues.

I love working with couples where one is either formerly incarcerated or has been caught up in our criminal justice system. Incarceration can have a profound effect on a person—and by extension, their spouse—long after someone is freed. Previously incarcerated individuals may experience depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, or PTSD that has a trickle-down effect upon their spouses.

My passion for couples counseling stems from witnessing its power in my own marriage. I divorced my husband of more than twenty years in 2013. I remarried five years later, admittedly bringing a lot of past baggage and negative coping skills along. Only when my second marriage started to fail was I willing to try therapy as a last ditch effort. It worked! I became so interested in the science behind it, I returned to school to earn a post Graduate Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Regis University in 2021.

My Therapist's Toolbox

An eclectic mix of modalities, including:

GOTTMAN METHOD

John Gottman is a pioneer in the field of relationship analysis and author of more than 30 books and has developed a number of techniques we can use to improve marital functioning.

NARRATIVE THERAPY

The words we tell ourselves and our partners are powerful. Narrative Therapy recognizes this and examines possibilities for redefining our lives and relationships.

SOLUTION FOCUSED THERAPY

Sometimes, it's less important to know the “why” behind the problem and talk about the “how” to spark change action. Solution focused therapy uses scaling questions and other nitty gritty techniques to focus on the solution, not the problem.

EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY

This model uses attachment styles for the basis of healing underlying emotional conflicts.
